The MERK team first debuted as a DJ trio in 2011 while still in high school, and they have never looked back since. For the next few years, the trio would organize and DJ parties centered around gathering NYC’s new creative generation under one roof. Events at Convicts NYC’s old store space in SoHo, the Roger Smith Hotel, and Santos Party House attracted many of the early Yeezy season models and earned write-ups from Bullett Magazine, Mass Appeal, The Fader, The Source, and more. In 2016, their party stunts landed them in a Shade Room viral clip (amassing over a million views) when they pulled up outside of a Travis Scott show in a U-Haul and wearing ski masks, causing a small riot outside of the event space as fans rushed the truck, camera phones in hand. In those early years, MERK began to partner with brands such as Pabst Blue Ribbon, Ksubi Jeans, and Moët Chandon. In 2017, the trio was featured in Ksubi’s flagship store opening, presented by legendary Australian skater and TV host Corbin Harris.
All the while, MERK La Familia began to release music as a group, starting with their debut single “Amazing”, which was featured in Cipha Sounds’ Bape Tape, which premiered in every Bape store worldwide. The group then followed up with The Fader endorsed, “LOUD!” EP, which melded hip hop, R&B, and rock with a post-apocalyptic sound and premiered on Noisey x Beats1 radio. The group then followed up in 2017 with “Safe In Sound”, a complex emotional journey that takes listeners through a simultaneously sad and joyful futuristic worldscape. The project was lauded by Office Magazine for its unforgettable vibe as well as MERK’s innovative release tactics, which involved direct correspondence with fans through VenMo. In 2018 the group released “Dirty:Water”, the first part of a three-part series exploring themes of love and lust in a dying world. Since then, the group has taken their DJ game to another level, playing parties in LA, Miami Art Basel, Mexico City, as well as their hometown of New York in the Lower East Side. In November, the trio won the first ever Convicts DJ Battle, beating out local and international legends in a silent disco battle royale.
MERK La Familia has kicked off 2019 with a bang, announcing their bi-weekly residency with legendary underground electronic radio station Halfmoon BK. In February, they hosted the 2nd annual MERK Zona Maco Art Week after party in Mexico City as well played a funky DJ set at Foro Indie Rocks for Glitter Bazaar. This June, MERK will be returning to Mexico for a summer tour in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Oaxaca City. They will also be running a month-long educational workshop in partnership with non-profit Arte Pro to teach young & disadvantaged children about the empowering process of making music.
